is the question of the tax cuts expiring. and for the obama administration, the question is, is it in their interest to trade tax cuts for the wealthy? increase for the wealthy for raising the age for eligibility for medicare, for example. i'm not sure that that's a trade that they are eager to make immediately. >> let me show you the side by side comparison. the president wants $1.6 trillion in revenue and republicans want to cap the same deductions for the rich but republicans want to change the age to 67 and change the way they calculate social security payments. i wonder, though, when we look at these numbers, are we that far apart in. >> i think they are definitely rather far aare part at this moment in time. yeah, absolutely. >> so there are so many ways that any of this could affect the average tack payer, obviously if taxes go up. but what about funding to states and localities. i know that one of the things that they are concerned about is that when you make cuts, that essentially those cuts are going to come on their budgets. what could happen in a meeting like thi

been fairly quiet throughout the first term of the obama administration. now the president has been reelected, george w. bush sort of comes out a little bit to make this big address, why? what is the timing about, do you think? >> i think the timing was shrewd. he really made a point of staying quiet during the first couple of years of president obama's administration, saying that he wanted the about the to be able to do his job, he didn't think he needed a former president to go out there and do somed tore ra some editorializing. he gave some peaches, enjoyed his life. he was not the subject of any praeurbgsz in fact not the subject at all at the republican convention in tampa in august. as mitt romney was trying to win the presidentee again, george w. bush was really a recluse. i think now that the election is over the republicans lost. he wants to have a role in one of his causes. immigration is a passion he shares with his brother jeb, former governor of florida who is thinking of his own political future and possibly a white house run and wants to help in the reset of the repub

when the obama administration got belarus to give up their highly enriched uranium too. their stockpile of the material was taken away and secured by the united states. the guy in kazakhstan, the guy who named a national holiday in his own honor, he agreed to give up a portion of his country's highly-enriched uranium and all the risk that goes with it. it's remarkable that coup tries that used to be part of a soviet union, these countries agreed to give up their nuclear weapons and that they also agreed to give up material used to make nuclear weapons. so while there are a lot of things to worry about with belarus, we can worry a little less about their stockpile because they let us lock some of it up. american policy that makes this a priority is now more than 20 years old. it goes back to 1992. it's the cooperative threat reduction program. it's named after the senator sam nun and richard lugar. this is one of the things that our government does. you may remember me wearing a funny outfit when we traveled to mexico while they were giving up the last of their jury rain yum. working wit

her? >> in the obama administration, yes. what are her qualifications? let's list them. she's a major fundraiser for president obama -- megyn: okay, that will begin and end the list. [laughter] >> no, it doesn't, no. she's a leftist in her politics, she's a celebrity who supported him in his re-election, and she's a monster to work with. are those not diplomatic characteristics that we'd welcome in someone who goes to london as our ambassador? i'm joking, obviously. megyn: well, you list the accurate, you know, the stuff you said about her is reportedly true. i mean, she's notorious for being difficult to work with and so on. but all the presidents do this. this is what they all do. if you raise a lot of money for me and i'm running for president, you're going to be an ambassador. that's half the reason people do it. >> however, president obama back in '08 when he first became president, he said he was going to appoint more professionals with diplomatic experience to the service. since then he has appointed 59 ambassadors, 40 of which have no diplomatic experience -- megyn: but she is

freely in the eastern libyan city. what is going on here? >> i think it's a big problem for the obama administration and for the country. the president was right on september 12th when he said that the world needs to understand that when the united states is messed with there will be retribution, and what we've seen thus far, whether it's in the ap story, or a new york times story with one of the suspected plotters of the attack sipping fruit drinks with reporters, or, you know, the fact that the fbi continue get on the ground for several weeks after the attack there doesn't seem to be the urgency that the president suggested that there would be. i think the world needs to see that beyond the immediate concern of just bringing to justice the people who actually committed the act. bill: why does it appear to be such a low priority? what would explain that? >> well one guess would be that it isn't a high priority. this is not something that seems to have taken up a lot of time of folks in the white house, of folks elsewhere. i think if there were the urgency that the president said ther

security. but the obama administration and harry reid right now democrats don't want social security even on the table because it is not connected. the republicans -- want it there because they want to cut social security but the democrats are saying look, social security is not the problem. there is an easy fix to that. we'll take care of that later. we'll take care of that next. but right now don't touch social security. don't touch it. just put it out of the equation. and deal with fiscal crisis as it is. deal with the need for combination balanced approach of spending cuts that the president's put forward and new tax revenue which the president knows most of it has to come for tax cuts for the wealthiest. when we solve that problem then we'll let them deal with social security. but not muck it up right now. >> announcer: this is the "bill press show." and i'm just blanking a little bit. i think his phrase for it was feed the beast going to do the young turks. i think the number one thing that viewers like about the young

with the bill. press secretary jay carney said mr. obama is determined to phase out the bush administration tax cuts for families making more than $250,000 a year. >> he will not sign a bill that extends those tax rates for the top 2%. we can't afford it. it is not a wise economic policy or wise fiscal policy. and it would defeat the principle of balance that he has embraced. >> so with less than a month to go before the deadline, we've now had an offer and a counteroffer, but arguably, no real attempt at compromise. democrats say republicans haven't detailed how they would increase tax revenue and they haven't offered enough of it and republicans say democrats haven't agreed to serious entitlement program cuts. steve, gretchen, brian? >> steve: thank you very much, live from the north lawn. ten minutes before the top of the hour. you probably remember the $6 million man. >> wed into to make the world's first bionic man better than he was before. better, stronger, faster. >> steve: our next guest says he can make this a reality, merging man with machine. it does not involve lee majors. >> gretc
